I was born in the eternally beautiful place called Mysuru in the south Indian state of Karnataka and raised in the glorious state of Gujarat, India. My story is by no means a unique story as many of us Indians are born in one region of India and raised in another. But that’s what enabled me to enjoy the true Indian experience; that of embracing the culture of other regions while never letting go of my roots. This experience is reflected in my cooking as well.
“Winning is very tangible; it’s very exciting, it’s very pleasing, but it’s momentary. If you can do things that last, that each generation can build upon, then that’s when you’re cooking.” This quote by the famous tennis player Billie Jean King is a fitting tribute to my mother and my grandmother Venkamma. I have heard that whatever my grandmother cooked had an amazing taste to it. Her cooking was a combination of Karnataka and Andhra cuisine. I can tell from the recipes that apart from taste, they were also dictated by principles of science. My mother continued that tradition and more, by adding traditional Gujarati food in her cooking repertoire. Their recipes are a real family treasure for me.
I love to cook and I take it quite seriously; being equally conscious of taste and ingredients. A lot of recipes you find here will be traditional recipes from Karnataka, Andhra and Gujarat. Some are my mother’s, some are my own, some are from friends and family exactly as they gave them, and some are adapted from recipes of friends, family, and cookbooks. At the heart of it, cooking is about loving and sharing. This blog is an expression of these sentiments.
I would love to hear from you. Feel free to post your comments on this blog. After all, this web site is a way for me to connect with you.
Namaste and Welcome.
This site is dedicated to my mother Indira.

Hi Namitha, thank you so much. Always nice to hear from another Mysoorean. When I started writing my recipes, blogs were a popular medium. Now, it’s all youtube videos, which require more time to prepare and present. Due to busy lifestyle, I have not been able to do it, but I hope I can do it. Sorry, no fb page or instagram. Thanks again!

Thank You , I like Prasad also, and I make a Sheero Vegan Style. I usually always add or serve with fresh green herbs of some kind, like Oregano, Rosemary or other available herb. The Vegan Cats like a Sheero type of meal. I would like to make it as a Live Food , with the Sprouted Grains, and then dehydrated or put in the sun until done. I like the Namaste’ that you added also. 🙂

Thanks for reaching out. Sorry, but I am not the person you are looking for. My last name is Krishnamurthy. We moved out of Bhavnagar in 1977 when I was quite young. My father worked for the irrigation department and we lived near the Collector and DSP’s house, very close to the salt reasearch colony.
Hope you find the person you are looking for.

Hi Anu,
I had stumbled upon your site a year ago (and left a comment) but never tried the recipes. It’s a year later and I’m married now! My husband, who isn’t Indian, does not expect me to cook (bless him!), but we order in a lot more than I like. My excuse is that we both have demanding jobs and are too tired when we get home from work 7/7:30. When I do cook, I rarely make Indian food because it feels more complicated to me. That said,I’m going to make conscious effort to cook more and cook Indian. Can you recommend the recipes on your site that are good for simple/weeknight Indian cooking? (Selfishly, I would love if you could tag a few of your current recipes as “Quick & easy” so that it appears as its own category.) Thanks!!

Is it true that in Gujarati Kadhi leaves of Mitho Limdo are used? Is Mitho Limdo same as Kari Patta?
Thanks in advance for any reply?
June 24, 2011 at 7:01 pm
Hi!
Yes, in Gujarati kadhi, kari patta is used a lot and it is the same as Mitho Limdo.

I somehow stumbled across your lovely website and realized I would have to return many times. That first glance was the Aloo Masaledar photograph, a dish that had instant appeal for me as what we call comfort food, that which gives us a sense of well-being. Your photographs are a great help for those of us who are not so familiar with the dishes, but love the food. Thank You.

Your passion for great Indian cuisine is obvious from your writings. It is only an hour after lunch time and I am already hungry just looking at the appetizing food photos. I guess all of us at work can take the liberty of calling you the “culinary artist” 🙂
Keep up the good work!

Dear Anupama,
So wonderful that you have so many Indian recipes under one roof. Often I feel that many of our traditional recipes and cooking science may get lost with the change in life style that is so apparent in the Indian cities today.
I have been asking my mother since long to compile some traditional recipes from Uttar Pradesh. I am sure your blog will inspire her!
Best wishes,

Hi Anupama,
Good to reconnect with you after so many years. A very nice website you have here – I think I’ll try out some of your recipes.
I finally remembered the name of the Gujarathi snack we were talking about – Khakhara! This was the one I had mail-ordered from LA upon your recommendation! And I do remember enjoying them.
You have a nice collection of recipes here which you must have collected over years and also improvised upon. Why don’t you publish them as a book along with these beautiful pictures?
Best,
Shantha

As a 1st gen Guju from New York, I am so thrilled to have found this site! My mom is a fabulous home chef and learned cooking by doing, not by recipes, so she doesn’t have any true recipes–with measurments and steps–to pass on to me. I have a great multi-regional Indian cookbook, but few things taste “like Mom’s”. I haven’t tried your recipes yet, but from reading them, they sound pretty damn close. Thanks for doing this great service esp for us ABDs! (I was never a fan of the term ABCD.)
January 15, 2010 at 6:00 am
Hi Palak,
What a heart-warming note you have written to me! Thank you so much. I agree, we always want our food esp. everyday food to be “like mom’s”. I really hope you enjoy my recipes.

Very interesting site. I explored the site for finding some recipes suiting to the recommendations for reversing diabetes. I had been vegetarian from north of India {Western UP), as they and hence dishes from south like idly attract me. Sugar, wheat and polished rice is to be totally avoided. Also no fat or dairy items including yoghurt are to be excluded. All condiments including chillis in moderation are welcomed-infact recommended.Nuts not more than an ounce a day are also to be taken for healthful diet.
Looking forward some recipes having Indian taste and flavour but conforming to latest guidelines on food for reversing diabetes (which also helps in BP and cardio related troubles)-One such comprehensive reference is that of ‘Dr Neal Barnard’s programme for reversing Diabetes’.This book is available in local book stores.

Cashew Almond Halwa

I am very happy you used my blog and better yet everything came out well. Thanks so much for leaving nice comments. It feels really good.
By the way, your port sippers are being used regularly. It’s funny whenever a port bottle is opened at home, people in the neighborhood seem to get a whiff of it and we always end up having more company. No problem though, thanks to you I have 8 sippers now.
Keep them parties going…

Hi Daksha,
Thank you so much.
For Idlli and Dosa, I have been using butterfly brand stone grinder and I am very happy with it. The other popular brand is called Ultra. Here is a website where you can order one.
http://www.indiaplaza.com/appliances/pd.aspx?sku=348304
One thing I would say is that buy this grinder only if you know you are going to use this often. It’s kind of big and heavy and clean up etc. does take some time. Of course, idlis and dosas come out really well compared to using American mixers.

Your recipes are so good that I started to enjoy good food again. My wife started trying out your recipes and I get to eat them all.
Living outside India for so long, I was craving for masala dosa. Your masala dosa recipe is sensational.
Keep up the good work and I get to eat tasty food.
